Sending wine as a gift from Poland to USA?

My girlfriend sent me (I live in San Francisco, CA) a gift from Warsaw, Poland about 2.5 weeks ago. The gift as I found out contained a wine bottle and now we're thinking it may have been rejected since it was an alcoholic beverage. Can anyone answer this? Is sending alcohol to USA not possible? Do you have to be a certified something (importer)? Thanks guys. :)
It's not allowed according to u.s. custom laws
you can be sure someone is enjoying it though!

Would it be inappropriate to take a bottle of wine to a gift-exchange at work?

It's not the Secret Santa game, but the one that everyone picks a gift and you can either steal someone else's gift or choose a new one from the pile.
Would a bottle of wine be an inappropriate gift?

Depends on the work crowd…if they are a party crowd, then it would be fine. If they are a stodgy crowd, then it would be….still Ok, I think.

It also depends on the level of professionalism that the company tries to project (whether everyone is really that professional or not is another question…..)

I think, though that the bottle of wine will be the most popular gift to "steal….." ;)

Good red wine suggestion for my boss' Christmas gift?

Posted on December 17th, 2008 by admin

Filed under wine gift | 10 Comments »

My boss is Italian and every Christmas, I get him a bottle or two of wine. I usually ask the store manager for recommendations, but figured I might be able to get great ones here. I believe he is partial to petite syrah. I have another gift, but I can go up to $40-50 for the wine.
He very rarely drinks white wine, so red is definitely more practical. I want him to be able to enjoy it, not let it sit and collect dust!

Is it okay to bring homemade wine as a hostess gift?

Posted on December 3rd, 2008 by admin

Filed under wine gift | 15 Comments »

Further to my previous question for hostess gift ideas and everyone’s gracious responses, I will probably bring wine. Would homemade wine be too tackey? Or is it okay? (I personally love my home made wine).
It is actually wine (not moonshine or hooch).

no, not at all. It actually shows you put some thought into the gift. Now, some yuppie snobs might find it tacky, but that’s b/c the nuvo riche have no class.

When giving wine as a gift, how much should you spend?

Posted on December 1st, 2008 by admin

I know you should definitely spend more than you would on a bottle for personal consumption - or I should, anyway. I usually spend less than $10 on a bottle if it just for me.

How much should you spend if it is for a gift?

Monetary guidelines are very important for this, as there are a multitude of varieties of wine, and you need to have a starting point somewhere.

Is there etiquette protocol on this? I will probably have to bring a bottle of wine to several gatherings this year, and I’d like to know.

Thanks.

With the different good wines that are around for $10 now that would be a good limit.
